If you’re a driver in the United States, you’ve probably heard the word “recall” mentioned in passing at one point or another. Recalls are issued when an automaker or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) finds that “a vehicle, equipment, car seat, or tire creates an unreasonable safety risk or fails to meet minimum safety standards.”
When a recall is issued for a vehicle, the corresponding manufacturer must remedy the issue by providing repairs, replacing the defective part, offering the buyer a refund, or buying back the defective vehicle. In most cases, the vehicle can be made roadworthy through repairs or part replacements.
Almost every major automaker issues at least a handful of recalls annually. Some recalls are for relatively benign issues, such as excessively small font on a car’s touchscreen or dim instrument clusters. Other recalls are more consequential, addressing engine failures, detaching exterior parts, and even spontaneous vehicle combustion. In this study, our Nashville car accident lawyers focus on the 153 recalls issued by Ford Motor Company (Ford) in 2025.
Ford’s Historic Year of Auto Recalls
In 2025, Ford broke the record for “most recalls issued in a single calendar year” – not an accomplishment that any automaker would desire! As of this study’s publication on date of publication, Ford issued a whopping 153 auto recalls in 2025. Prior to 2025, General Motors (GM) held the record for most annual recalls with 77 issued in 2014. Not only has Ford nearly doubled that figure, they actually managed to surpass the annual recall record in July of 2025.
In addition to setting the record for annual recalls issued, Ford led all automakers in U.S. recalls in 2022 and 2023. Ford was fined $165 million by the NHTSA for “not recalling cars with defective rearview cameras in a timely manner” in November of 2024. Interestingly enough, nineteen of the recalls issued by Ford in 2025 involved a problem with the rearview camera.
The NHTSA’s action against Ford in 2024 is additionally noteworthy because it stipulated that an independent third party would be assigned to oversee and make recommendations regarding Ford’s “compliance with the consent order, the Vehicle Safety Act, and federal regulations.” Ford would be subject to this additional oversight for a minimum of three years, with the NHTSA having an option to extend this monitoring for a fourth year.
Ford has acknowledged issues with vehicle quality in recent years and taken steps to remedy the company’s recall woes. The company underwent a leadership restructuring in late 2024 to bolster the besieged quality team. Additionally, Ford implemented the Mobile Artificial Intelligence Vision System into dozens of their plants. This is an AI platform that has shown itself remarkably capable of detecting vehicle defects in real time. While the number of recalls issued in 2025 is far from ideal, Ford deserves some credit for taking accountability for quality issues and implementing a strategy to improve the safety and reliability of their vehicles.
If you want to check for recall orders affecting your own car, you can enter your vehicle identification number (VIN) into the NHTSA portal.
Repeat Recalls Caused by Ford’s Software Updating System
When the NHTSA fined Ford for delayed action in recalling vehicles in 2024, they also forced the automaker to review the efficiency of past recalls. Doing so uncovered a problem with the system Ford used to install software updates. In some cases, a software update would fail but be reported by the system as a success. Vehicle owners would receive their car back, even though it had not undergone the appropriate software update.
As a result of the software system’s shortcomings, Ford was forced to issue additional recalls to verify that software updates were carried out on all initially affected vehicles. In total, Ford issued 42 recalls to address vehicles that were previously recalled but “repaired incorrectly.” This amounts to approximately 27% of the automaker’s recalls issued in 2025.
The chart below breaks down the top-five categories for vehicles that were repeatedly recalled. More than a quarter of Ford’s repeat recalls were initiated to correct an electrical system fault. Just under 20% of the automaker’s repeat recalls address problems with back-up cameras.

How Many Recalls Does Ford Typically Have in a Year?
As mentioned previously, Ford has led all automakers in the number of recalls issued in the U.S. in three of the past five years (2022, 2023, and 2025). Tesla and Stellantis briefly surpassed Ford in annual recalls issued in 2024. The chart below tracks the number of recalls issued by Ford from 2021 through 2025. The brand hovered between 50 and 70 recalls in 2021 through 2024, before skyrocketing to 153 recalls in 2025.

2025 Ford Recalls Issued Per Month
May and June were particularly challenging months for Ford this past year. The automaker issued 22 recalls in both of those months, with only October’s 20 recalls coming close to those numbers. Ford only issued four recalls in November, but finished the year with fifteen recalls announced in the month of December.

Which Other Manufacturers Were Recall Leaders in 2025?
Ford’s 153 recalls issued in 2025 eclipsed all other automakers by a wide margin. However, there were seven other automakers that issued at least twenty individual recall orders throughout the year. Checking in a distant second to Ford was Chrysler, with 53 recalls issued throughout the calendar year. General Motors (27) and Volkswagen (25) finished the year with the third and fourth-most recall orders issued. Hyundai, Honda, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz also had at least twenty recall orders issued in 2025.

What Are Ford’s Largest Recall Orders?
Three of the recalls issued by Ford in 2025 affected at least one million vehicle owners, per NHTSA recall data. All three of those recalls, visible in the chart below, were related to rearview camera glitches or failures. In total, Ford issued five recalls affecting at least 500,000 vehicle owners. Recalls 25V455000 and 25V467000 were issued for low pressure fuel pump failure and cracked fuel injectors causing fires, respectively.
While all recalls are serious and should be addressed by vehicle owners as soon as possible, this chart excellently demonstrates that not all recalls are created equally. While a nonfunctional or glitching review camera can certainly increase the risk of a collision, it is likely less of a risk to drivers than a sudden engine stall caused by a fuel pump failure or spontaneous vehicle fire caused by a cracked fuel injector.

Ford Recalls By Cause, 2024 – 2025
We wanted to take a closer look at the leading causes of Ford’s recall orders in 2025 and see how they compared to the previous year. Not surprisingly, the manufacturer issued more recalls for each of their top 5 categories in 2025 than in 2024. There were at least twice as many recalls in four of the leading five categories, with recalls for “service brakes / hydraulics” nearly quadrupling between the two years. “Back over prevention” recalls more than tripled over the same timeframe.

Do Not Drive / Park Outside Recalls Issued
Most recalls do not stipulate that drivers need to stop using their vehicles until they can be serviced. However, in some cases, a recalled vehicle may be unsafe to drive or even park inside your garage until it is inspected and fixed by a qualified mechanic. The two types of higher-urgency recall advisories to be aware of are do not drive and park outside orders.
A do not drive advisory is issued when a vehicle is likely to cause serious injuries or death if operated under normal driving conditions. In many cases, this type of recall is issued when a car has the potential to lose power, braking, or steering under normal operating conditions. In 2025, Ford issued three do not drive advisories. Two of these recalls were issued due to a chance of a vehicle’s control arm detaching. The third advisory was for a potential sudden loss of braking ability.
Park outside advisories are issued when it is unsafe for your vehicle to be parked close to a structure (like a house) or other vehicles. In most cases, vehicles subject to a park outside advisory are at risk of spontaneous vehicle fires. Vehicle fires may occur for a number of reasons, from battery defects to oil leaks. Ford issued a pair of park outside advisories in 2025, both connected to the risk of vehicle battery fires.
